To add a virtual background for your Zoom meeting, you must first make sure you have downloaded the Zoom application and are able to log in to your SUNY Old Westbury Zoom account in the Zoom application.
Note: The Zoom virtual background feature will only work for devices that have the proper operating system and core processor. If you are unsure if your device meets the requirements, then please visit Zoom's virtual background requirements page. Your device must have both requirements in order for the virtual background to work. For example, if your device has the proper operating system but lacks in the proper core processor, then the virtual background feature will not work.
Once logged in to the Zoom application, access the Zoom application settings by selecting the gear icon on the top left corner.
Once in the application settings, select "Background & Filters" from the menu on the left-hand side. When in the backgrounds and filters section, you will see virtual backgrounds that Zoom has already provided for you. If you wish to add your own virtual background, select the plus button on the top right-hand side.
After selecting the plus button, a pop will then appear and ask you to select the image that you wish to upload for your Zoom virtual background. Please select either a .jpg, .png, or .gif image. After you upload the image, it will then appear as an option in your virtual backgrounds tab. You can preview how a background will look by ensuring your camera is on, and then selecting the virtual background. After it has been selected, a preview of the virtual background will show.
Note: If you notice discoloration within the virtual background, you might need to deselect the "I have a green screen" box at the bottom of the application. If the virtual background does not work after deselecting the box, then it is a result of your device not being able to support the latest features of Zoom. You can continue to use Zoom regularly without the virtual background.
Once you know which virtual background you want to use, you can leave it selected and exit the Zoom application settings.
You also have the option to change your virtual background while in your Zoom meeting through the Zoom meeting application. To do this while in your Zoom meeting, first ensure that your camera is turned on. After your camera is turned on, select the arrow next to the "Stop Video" button. In the menu that pops up, select "Choose Virtual Background."
You will then be redirected to your Zoom application settings, where you can select a virtual background. Once you have selected the virtual background, it will automatically be applied to the Zoom meeting and you are able to close the Zoom virtual background settings tab.
Note: Closing the Zoom settings tab does not mean that it will cause you to leave the meeting. You will still be in the meeting after closing the Zoom virtual background settings.
Your Zoom virtual background has now been applied. It will stay applied for all future meetings unless you choose to change it. If your creation was unsuccessful then reach out to servicedesk@oldwestbury.edu with your name, course ID, and section number so that a member from the ITS department can properly assist you.
